Cub Cadet manufactures gasoline-powered push mowers for commercial and residential use. These mowers, which also come in self-propelled models, will occasionally need a spark plug replacement because of damage or normal wear and tear. It is essential that the right model spark plug is selected for replacement to ensure that your Cub Cadet’s ignition and combustion systems maintain optimal operation.
Recommended Models
Cub Cadet’s walk behind push mowers are equipped with Cub Cadet engines. The recommended spark plug replacement for those engines has the part number 951-10292, as of the date of publication. This plug also replaces the ones in older Cub Cadet push mower models with the part number 751-10292. Self-propelled Cub Cadet walk-behind mowers also take the same part number if they use Cub Cadet engines. The Model CC 98H walk behind mower uses part number 98079-56846 for the Honda engine version. Part number 759-3336 is for Kohler engine version and the Wide Area Walk Behind Mower equipped with a Briggs and Stratton engine.
Spark Plug Function
Spark plugs serve the same function in all gasoline-powered Cub Cadet mowers. When the pull start or button start is activated for the engine, the flywheel generates voltage. That voltage travels to the spark plug, which will emit an electrical discharge into the combustion chamber to ignite fuel vapors. The combustion provides the energy to move pistons, thus powering the mower and blades. This process happens 1,000 times a minute during operation.
Spark Plug Settings
The engine owner’s manual for your cub cadet push mower specifies the spark plug settings for optimal performance. Each spark plug must have a measurable and specific gap between the plug tip and the chamber. For example, the Honda-powered CC 98H requires a gap setting between 0.028 and 0.030. If the gap is too wide, the discharge won’t reach the vapors. If the gap is too close, not enough space will exist for a proper discharge.
Maintenance
To ensure your spark plug is functioning properly, follow the maintenance schedule for spark plug checks and replacement. Spark plugs should be replaced at the beginning of every season. Check the spark plug condition and reset the gap at least once a season. Signs of a possible fouled spark plug include rough idling, intermittent starts and smoke after starting. A fouled spark plug will have a damaged tip, melted tip or tip covered in wet oil.
