The Craftsman self-propelled mowers use a blade adapter to help secure the blade to the crankshaft. The blade adapter has flanges that fit over the sides of the blade. The adapter fits over the recessed area of the crankshaft and removes from the Craftsman mower with little difficulty. Unlike other blade adapters, Craftsman does not use a square key to lock the adapter onto the shaft. The shaft and the inside diameter of the blade adapter are grooved to mate together. When reinstalling the adapter, it is a good idea to place a small film of oil on the crankshaft and inside of the blade adapter.
Things You'll Need
Block of wood (1-foot long piece of 2x4)
Socket wrench
Pliers
Find the fuel shut off lever near the front of the Craftsman mower. Turn the switch to the "off" position. Disconnect the plug wire from the spark plug. Tilt the mower on its right side so the fuel tank fill tube is pointing away from the ground.
Place a block of wood between the blade and the mower deck. This helps keep the blade from rotating when loosening the center mounting bolt. Grab one end of the blade with your hand.
Turn the center mounting bolt counterclockwise with a socket wrench. Remove the bolt and the bell washer that is on top of the blade. The bell washer is an oblong washer with flanges that fit over the sides of the blade.
Pull the blade away from the mower crankshaft. Sometimes the blade adapter comes off the shaft with the blade. Pull the blade adapter off the blade with your hands. If the blade adapter remains on the shaft, grasp the adapter with a pair of pliers. Pull the blade adapter off the crankshaft of the mower.
