The Rules of Flower Arrangements. Arranging flowers may seem intimidating, but it's easy to make simple, attractive arrangements at home by following a few basic principles. Flowers can make your home more beautiful and welcoming, so it's worth spending a few minutes to master the art of basic flower arranging.

Choosing Flowers
In general, choose flowers that you like instead of trying to decide which flowers would make the most interesting arrangement. Visit your local florist or grocery store and spend time looking at the different blooms available to see which you like best. Consider color and size.
If you want to keep it simple, choose just one kind of flower and work with that. If you're feeling a little braver, choose two or more flowers in the same color. If you're very adventurous or like a more eclectic look, choose a variety of flowers in a variety of colors.
Choosing Filler
You can bypass this step completely if you want to keep things simple. But if you want to choose filler, look for small flowers, like baby's breath, leaves and greenery that appeal to you. Be creative: You may find tree branches from your backyard are the perfect filler, or you may love the way the sage from your garden looks with your daisies.
Choosing Your Container
You can use a basic cylindrical vase to keep things simple. A round vase is playful; a square or rectangular vase looks more sophisticated. Clear or white vases let the flowers shine; colorful vases make a statement. Choose the one that best suits your style. Consider creative containers like empty tea tins, pitchers or coffee mugs.
Creating Your Arrangement
Have a shape in mind for your arrangement. If you have many full blooms, you might choose a round shape. If your flowers are tall and slender, a pyramid arrangement will work well.
Use scissors to trim flowers to the right height for your container. Fuller flowers usually look best when they are an inch or two taller than their container. Slimmer flowers can be a few inches longer.
Start by positioning the largest flowers in the center of the container one at a time, working from the center outwards. If you're doing a single flower arrangement, you're done. If you're using a variety of flowers, begin adding the next-smaller flowers in the same way, one at a time. Repeat until all the flowers are in the vase.
If you're using greenery, add it at the end, one piece at a time, concentrating the most greenery in the center and at the back of the arrangement.
