Three of the 16 species of hummingbirds that live in the U.S. are found in Florida. Many Floridians are familiar with the ruby-throated hummingbird, and the black-chinned and rufous hummingbirds visit the state during winter months. Hummingbirds can flap their wings up to 200 times per second and have the ability to hover, fly backwards and forwards. Adults consume large quantities of nectar every day while young birds eat insects.
Firebush
The Firebush (Hamelia patens) grows quickly during spring and summer months and some grow as high as 12 feet. The plants grow in sun or shade and although native to Florida can withstand freezing conditions. Many people cut the plants down to the roots in winter but they quickly regrow each spring.
Firecracker Plant
Firecracker plants (Russelia equisetiformis) grow between 3 and five feet and sprout red, orange or yellow flowers. The plants are are prevalent throughout the state and endure hot summers and cold winters very well. The Firecracker grows best in partial sunlight and flowers year round.
Powderpuff
Powderpuff (Calliandra emarginata) plants produce red flowers year round in South Florida. The plants grow to a height of between five and seven feet tall. In Northern parts of the state the plant dies off during cold spells but if cut back to the roots, the plant recovers when warm weather returns. The Powderpuff, grows best in partial shade and it's abundant nectar supply attracts hummingbirds throughout the year.
Lantana
Lantana (Camara) plants are popular throughout the Southern states. Lantana grow best in full sun and produce flowers throughout the year. The plant grows to reach a height of two or three feet. Lantana plants come in a variety of colors including lavender, red and yellow. The plants attract hummingbirds, butterflies and other species of birds. Lanata survive in salty conditions near the coast and survive cold spells sometimes experienced in North Florida.
Butterfly Bush
The Butterfly Bush (Buddleia alternifolia), as its name suggests, attracts butterflies but hummingbirds also gravitate toward the plant. Some Butterfly bushes grow to heights of 15 feet. There are over 100 varieties of the plant and they come in a variety of colors although purple, lavender and white plants are common.
