Xeriscaping is the process of choosing plants for the landscape that don't need additional water to thrive in a given climate. In much of California, this means plants that are drought- and heat-tolerant. A good rule of thumb when xeriscaping your yard is to use native plants that have adapted to the growing conditions of your climate, according to Growing Native. Many plants grow freely throughout California and will make ideal additions to your xeriscape.
California Poppy
Covering the California hills with a carpet of orange in the spring, the California poppy is a drought-tolerant flower that grows throughout California. The leaves of this annual are silvery or blue-gray and finely textured. This plant grows in full sun and sandy soil, according to Texas A&M. California poppy self-seeds freely and will come back year after year. The flowers reach 18 inches tall and are cup shaped, blooming on individual stalks and opening when the sun shines, closing at night and on cloudy days.
Yarrow
Yarrow grows to 3 feet tall, spreading via underground roots or rhizomes. Clusters of small flowers bloom on sturdy stalks in shades of white, burgundy and yellow all summer long and into fall. The leaves are green, feather-like and lacy. Yarrow is a perennial herb that grows in full sun and prefers sandy soil. Once established, yarrow is drought-tolerant. The Native Americans used the leaves as a tea to cure stomach disorders, according to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
California Lilacs
California lilacs, or Ceanothus, are a drought-tolerant native California shrub. Panicles, or clusters, of fragrant purple or white flowers bloom in the summer. Watering California lilacs in the summer will lead to a reduced life span for the bush, according to Las Pilitas Nursery. Depending on the cultivar, this shrub can grow to 6 feet tall and wide. The leaves are generally small and evergreen.
Clarkia
Also known as Godetia, Clarkia is a wildflower that grows to 24 inches tall in full sun or light shade. A California native, Clarkia is drought-tolerant after maturity. This annual prefers well-drained, sandy soil. The flowers are cup-shaped and bloom in shades of pink from pale to deep magenta in the summer, according to WildflowerInformation.org. This plant will die after the first frost but will self-seed, growing again in the spring.
