Types of Cactus. The cactus is a leafless plant commonly found in desert regions in North and South America. Because of their ability to conserve water, cacti thrive in hot, dry environments. In addition to spines protecting them from the elements, cacti also have flowers that bloom from their base.

Barrel Cactus
The barrel cactus is commonly found in North American deserts and have a cylindrical shape. The plant grows anywhere from 4 to 10 feet and thrives in dry conditions. A flower sits at the top, and the spines located on the cactus can grow up to a foot in length.
Claret Cup Cactus
The claret cup cactus, commonly found in the United States and Mexico deserts, grows at higher elevations. The plant grows from 2 to 12 feet. Colorful and decorative flowers bloom during the spring and summer on the cactus, along with long spines.
Hedgehog Cactus
The hedgehog cactus is common in the Arizona desert and is grows in greenhouses as well. A spiny, pear-shaped fruit grows on the cactus along with long spines. While the hedgehog cactus can reach up to 20 feet in height, the average range is from 6 to 8 feet.
Saguaro Cactus
The saguaro cactus grows 15 to 20 feet and lives for about 200 years. This is the largest cactus growing in the United States. Arms or branches grow and bend upwards. While spines are located on the plant, flowers and plants bloom in the spring and summer.
Pincushion Cactus
The pincushion cactus is a small cactus that only reaches 6 inches in height. Large flowers grow from the plant in a variety of colors, along with edible berries. Large spines are also located on the plant that may resemble sticking pins in a cushion.
