Planting Time and Water Needs
Plant green onion sets as soon as the soil can be tilled, typically in March or April in many regions of the country. Two to four weeks before the last frost is an appropriate planting time. They grow best in soil kept consistently moist but not soggy. Water the plants once a week during dry spells. Mulch helps control weeds and maintains the moisture level.
Planting Depth and Spacing
Plant the large onion sets at a depth of 1 inch. Allow about 12 to 18 inches between rows. Space large bulbs approximately 4 inches from each other. Two inches apart are all that is necessary for smaller bulbs. Some people prefer smaller bulbs for eating the green onions raw.

Green onions thrive in full sunlight. They require a well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Green onions grow in soils with slightly acidic pH. The pH level recommended by the Cornell University website is 6.2 to 6.8. All sections above the root are edible. The green onions are ready for harvest once they are 6 inches tall or taller. Larger and older green onions are stronger in flavor, so pick them early if you desire a mild flavor.
