Description
Almond trees range in size from 15 to 30 feet in height. The tree produces fruits that look similar to a green peach. As the fruit starts to split open, the nut inside is revealed. The nuts are removed from the hulls and dried for several days before they are eaten or stored.
Flowers
As one of the earliest blooming deciduous trees, almonds start flowering as early as February. The whitish-pink flowers appear well before the leaves come out. Since the flowers bloom so early, the trees grow best on the West Coast or in areas that receive protection from wind and cold. These climates work well if the nuts are to be harvested.
Late Bloomers
To avoid the danger of late spring frosts, some gardeners plant late-blooming almond tree cultivars.
