The STIHL 024 chainsaw is manufactured to meet certain specifications for the various operating parts on the chainsaw. While these come set at the factory and many cannot be adjusted, it's helpful to understand these specifications for troubleshooting problems, to make repairs, and to help in purchasing the chainsaw that will meet your needs. These settings will also help you better understand how your STIHL 024 chainsaw operates.
The Engine
The internal engine system contains a crankcase and a crankshaft. The crankshaft uses deep-groove ball bearings and needle cages on the small and big ends of the crankshaft. The crankcase needs to maintain 7.25 psi to operate. Above the crankshaft, the piston moves up and down in the cylinder; its specifications are 42 cm cubed with a bore that's 42 mm, which uses a 30-mm stroke to generate approximately 2.1 kW at 7,000 rpm. The maximum engine speed for the 024 is 13,000 rpm and it idles at 2,400 rpm. The clutch, a centrifugally operated clutch, engages at 3,600 rpm.
The Fuel System
The fuel system starts with a tank that has a .47 L capacity. The fuel mix ratio when using STIHL two-cycle engine oil is 50 to 1 gas to oil. While any brand name fuel works, it must have an octane rating of at least 90. The carburetor on this model is an all-position diaphragm carburetor with an integral fuel pump. Both the high speed and low speeds of the engine should be set at position "1," which can be achieved by turning the "L" and the "H" speed screws clockwise until they are fully seated and then turning them back one full rotation counterclockwise. The carburetor needs to maintain a pressure of 11.6 psi to function properly.
The Ignition System
The ignition system on the STIHL 024 contains an electronic magneto breakerless ignition with an integral trigger unit. The air gap between the flywheel magnet and the ignition module must be set at .2 to .3 mm. The spark plug for the 024 is either a Bosch WSR 6F, NGK BPMR 7 A, or a Champion RCJ 6Y. The electrode gap for the spark plug must maintain a distance of .5 mm to discharge the spark.
The Cutting Attachment
This STIHL 024 must use a STIHL Rollomatic with nose sprocket guide bar, which has a corrosion-resistant finish and induction hardened rails. The guide bar length used on the 024 is 13, 15 or 18 inches. The chain's specifications are .325 inches. It's a Rapid chain manufactured by STIHL. The sprocket on the clutch for this chain is be a 7-tooth .325-inch sprocket.
