Regular maintenance is needed in order to keep the lawn mower working correctly and includes the use of a specific type and amount of oil.

Amount of Oil
The amount of oil needed for a Cub Cadet lawn mower is 3 pints, which is generally the amount in one bottle of oil. The recommended type of oil is called SAE30 motor oil with an API rating of SF or greater, according to the Cub Cadet website. You can buy this type of motor oil in most auto or garden supply stores or online.
Initial Lawn Mower Assembly and Use
When the Cub Cadet mower is first purchased or shipped, assembly is often necessary. This includes filling the mower with oil, which should be done before the mower is started for the first time. Open the lawn mower crankcase and fill with one bottle of SAE30 motor oil.
Low Oil Level Problems
Regularly refilling the oil will be necessary in order to keep the Cub Cadet lawn mower working well. If the engine starts to overheat on a regular basis, the oil level may be low. The lawn mower may also get louder during operation if the oil is low.
Changing the Oil
When the oil needs to be changed in the Cub Cadet mower, most lawn mower owners can drain any remaining gas from the fuel reservoir. This should be done when the lawn mower is turned off and is cool. Then set a used oil collection container under the mower oil drain plug and open the drain plug. Allow the oil to empty completely and then close the oil drain plug. Some four-cycle engines do not have an oil drain plug and must be tipped over slowly until the oil fill port is facing the oil collection container and the oil drains out. The carburetor and air filter or cleaner must be held up from the ground. Once the oil is drained out, lift up the mower to the original position and refill with oil.
