While rebuilding your Craftsman lawn mower, you must remove the deck from the mower properly. The mower deck on a Craftsman lawn tractor is securely fastened to the underside of the lawn tractor frame by several spring tension fasteners and the blade pulley belt. Removing the mower deck yourself for maintenance or rebuilding purposes is well worth the time and effort as a mower mechanic can charge up to $100 for this task alone.
Things You'll Need
Blocks of wood
Pliers
Position a wood block under each side of the mower deck. Lower the deck adjustment lever to its lowest setting. This will put a slack in the tension fasteners and belt holding the deck up.
Roll the belt off of the blade pulleys on the top of the deck.
Disconnect the clutch rod from the center of the deck. The clutch rod is attached by a small retainer spring that is hooked into the end of the clutch rod. Unhook the retainer spring.
Unhook the four retainer brackets holding each corner of the deck up. The brackets have a retainer spring hooked through the end of them and connect to the Craftsman lawn tractor frame. Use a pliers if you can't unhook the spring by hand.
Raise the deck adjustment lever to its highest setting. Slide the mower deck out from under the lawn tractor.
