The throttle is a component of the lawnmower that controls the speed of the engine. The throttle is used when starting the engine and during mowing to regulate fuel consumption and the speed which the blades turn. When the engine cuts out due to lack of power, or the unit fails to respond to adjustments in the throttle handle, the throttle may need servicing or replacement. On most mowers a throttle handle pulls on a throttle cable to control the engine speed.
Things You'll Need
Screwdriver
Measuring tape
Wrench
Pliers
Push forward and backward on the throttle handle to inspect whether the handle is moving the throttle cable running down to the engine.
Press down on the tabs of the air filter cover, or remove the screw with a screwdriver. Remove the cover. Remove the air filter to inspect the throttle choke arm.
Measure the distance between control choke arm, which has the spring attached, and the control lever which the throttle cable pulls. The clearance should be 0 to 1 mm in length.
Loosen the lock nut with a wrench and move the adjuster up or down to get the correct clearance.
Loosen nuts holding the throttle cable at the handle if the cable is not taut and pull the cable with a pair of pliers until it is tight. Tighten the nuts again.
