Mulching large parts of a yard can get expensive depending upon the type of mulch. Knowing how much the cost will be might influence the total area covered and the type of mulch. The final costs of the mulch depend upon four factors: the total square feet and the depth of the mulch give the total cubic feet needed for the project; the amount of mulch needed to fill that cubic feet and the cost of the mulch per cubic feet give the final costs.

Multiple the width and length of the area covered by the mulch to find the total square inches. Multiple this by the desired height of the mulch to find the total cubic feet needed.
Ask the mulch dealer how many pounds of mulch is necessary to cover this amount of area. Mulch such as lava rock is large in size so it doesn't take much to fill space. Some mulch, such as tree bark, lies flat, so it takes more mulch to reach several inches in height.
Multiply the cost per individual pound of mulch times the amount the provider gives you for your desired coverage and this will equal the total dollar cost of the mulch for the project. If the dealer adds on transportation costs and spreading costs, be sure to factor this into the total.
Watch comparisons carefully. The total cost per pound of one type of mulch may be greater than another, but if you actually need less of it because it is bulkier, then the total overall cost may be lower.
