Many people have wondered what those small packets of plastic-like orbs are doing in places such as shoe boxes, clothing racks and other purchased goods. Those little packets contain silica gel bits. Silica gel is included with these products to absorb extra moisture that can cause damage or the buildup of mold or mildew. Silica gel is also used in flower shops, garden centers and nurseries as an effective method of drying the flowers that preserves much of the original beauty, texture and color of the flower. Once it has absorbed a large amount of moisture, silica gel can be redried and reused.
Things You'll Need
Oven
Oven-safe container
Silica gel
Preheat the oven to 275 degrees Fahrenheit.
Place silica gel in an oven-safe container.
Place silica gel into the oven and allow it to bake for at least one hour. Check the silica gel; you will know it is dry when it has turned a medium blue color.
Bake until the desired color has been reached. Remove the silica from the oven and allow it to cool completely before returning to use.
Tips & Warnings
Silica gel can also be dried in a microwave on medium heat for eight to 12 minutes. However, this method has a greater risk of burning or melting the silica gel, so the oven is recommended.
