Carburetors are the parts of an engine that deliver air and gasoline to the combustion chamber. Small engines are found on a variety of different appliances such as lawnmowers, tillers and weed eaters. The carburetors on these engines can over time get clogged due to overuse or lack of maintenance, but rebuilding them is quite simple. Rebuilding a small engine carburetor can be rewarding and is very straightforward if you follow a clear, step-by-step process.
Things You'll Need
Flathead screwdriver
Socket wrenches
Carburetor rebuild kit
Carburetor cleaner
Pliers
Order the proper carburetor rebuild kit for your make and model of small engine. This is easily accomplished by providing the carburetor model number from the side of the unit to a hardware store employee. Disconnect the gas hoses from the carburetor with the pliers and remove the bolts holding the carburetor body to the intake manifold.
Slide the carburetor and manifold gasket off of the engine, and unscrew the throttle needle housing at the top of the carburetor body.
Spray carburetor cleaner throughout the entire carburetor unit to loosen up any dirt or grime, then replace all the gaskets.
Install the manifold gasket on the motor mount and slide the carburetor back into place. Reattach the carburetor with the mounting bolts and slide the fuel hoses back into place on the carburetor nozzles with the pliers.
Start the engine and adjust the jet set screws to regulate the amount of fuel entering the combustion chamber so that the engine idles smoothly.
Tips & Warnings
Consult the owner's manual for your small engine in order to get the torque specifications for the carburetor mounting bolts. You do not want to break them off.
