Aphids suck the sap out of plants and steal their nutrients. The insects are very small and only measure around 1/8 of an inch in length. They range in color from light green to black and sometimes they have wings. Aphids can spread to other plants in your home and garden. When you notice the pests invading your plants, kill them quickly to prevent extensive damage. A homemade insecticidal soap will dehydrate and kill the insects so that your plants remain healthy.
Things You'll Need
Ivory dishwashing soap
1 gallon water
Spray bottle
Garden sprayer
Spray the plants with a strong stream of water from the garden hose to knock off as many aphids as possible.
Combine 1 teaspoon of Ivory dishwashing soap with 1 gallon of water.
Apply the soap solution to a small area on the plant to ensure that it will not harm the foliage. Leave the solution on the plant for one to two days.
Pour the soap solution into a spray bottle or in a garden sprayer.
Spray the solution onto the plants to kill the aphids.
Tips & Warnings
Use ivory soap that is free of perfumes and dyes to protect your plants.
Avoid applying the soap spray on the plants if beneficial insects, such as ladybugs, lacewings or praying mantises, are present because it will kill them.
