Encountering ticks in the woods is a natural occurrence. However, you might be surprised to find a tick crawling on your couch. Ticks can travel indoors on your clothing or in your pet's fur. The disease-carrying insects transmit bacteria that cause serious illnesses such as Lyme disease. Although it's best to use preventative measures when dealing with ticks, if you discover one on your couch, you must exterminate it.
Things You'll Need
Tweezers
Jar
Rubbing alcohol
Tick spray
Vacuum
Trash bag
Diatomaceous earth
Use tweezers to remove ticks visible on the couch. Grasp the ticks with tweezers, and drop them into a jar of rubbing alcohol.
Leave the ticks in the jar for a few minutes to ensure they're dead. Flush the dead ticks down the toilet.
Spray your couch with a flea and tick spray appropriate for indoor surfaces. Allow the spray to work for 30 minutes.
Vacuum your couch to remove dead ticks and tick eggs. Dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag immediately after you finish.
Sprinkle diatomaceous earth over the surface of the upholstery, along the floor, and other areas of the home, such as pet bedding. The natural powder is deadly to ticks but safe for animals and people.
Repeat these steps every three days until the ticks have been completely removed from your couch and your house.
Tips & Warnings
Protect yourself and your pets outdoors by using flea and tick repellents. Dress to cover your skin, and wear light-colored clothing so ticks are easy to spot.
Check your clothing and skin and your pet's fur before you go inside to be sure ticks aren't accidentally carried into the house.
If a tick is discovered in your skin or in your pet's skin, grasp the tick with tweezers, and pull it out and away from the skin.
