Introduction
There are many reasons why your electric lawn mower will not work, but the main reasons are problems with your ignition, battery or spark plugs. If you troubleshoot all these areas, it should give you an indication of what is wrong and how it can be fixed.
Ignition
If you are having problems with your electric lawn mower, it is possible that your ignition is to blame. When you begin troubleshooting, you will first need to make sure the dead man on your electrical lawn motor is working. The switch for the dead man must be in the proper position for the ignition to work. Turn the power switch to the "On" position and then turn it right back "Off"; turn it back "On" one more time to make sure there is a positive connection in the lawn mower. If there is a problem with the connection, then your ignition will need to be replaced.
Battery
After checking the ignition, take a look at the wires between the battery and the ignition. If you see any wear and tear in the wires, they will need to be repaired. Take a look at the battery cables and make sure they are securely attached to the battery posts. If you notice any corrosion on the battery, you will need to clean it. Be certain your battery is charged, because your electric lawn mower will not work without it.
Spark Plug
A bad spark plug will prevent your engine from turning over. Make sure the spark plug in your lawn mower is properly gapped. Gapped is the term used for the distance of electricity that arcs between the center electrode and ground electrode. Make sure it is installed correctly and connected to the spark plug wire. You will need a gap tool to determine the proper gap for your engine. If your spark plug is making sparks and your lawn mower will not start, you may need to get a new ignition module.
