Optimal Temperature
Pea plants grow well in moist, cool soil and thrive optimally in regions with moderate and cool weather. The optimum germination for peas is 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Peas as among the earliest spring crops that germinate best when soil temperatures are at least 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
Soil
Avoid planting peas in very wet soil. Test the soil by scooping a handful. If it clumps, it isn't ready for planting. Planting in poorly drained soil will lead to poor root health. Recommended soil pH for peas is between 6.0 to 6.7.
Cultural Management
Control the growth of weeds by hand pulling. Weed management is especially important in the initial six weeks. Keep soil consistently moist, and water plants earlier in the day to allow foliage to dry sufficiently. Plants that stay wet for extended periods of time and overnight are more prone to foliar disorders.
