The grubs of the Japanese beetle and European chafer feed on the roots of Michigan turf grasses. They are the most destructive from mid-April to early May and mid-August through September.
Symptoms
Look for dried up patches in the lawn, mainly during periods of dry weather. If the grass rolls back it is a good indication of a grub problem.
Diagnosis
Use a small shovel to dig up the soil at the edge of the dry patch and look for grubs. Grubs are white, shaped like the letter 'C" and are 1 inch in length.
Treatment
Read the pesticide label to determine when it should be applied. Some products should be applied before the grubs hatch in the middle of July while others should be applied while the grubs are active. Once you have applied the product to the soil, water it down into the soil and water deeply every day for three to four days.
