Color
Illinois tree leaves vary in color. The witchhazel tree has green leaves during the spring that turn orange or yellow in the autumn. The linden features leaves in a deeper shade of green with contrasting silver on the underside.
Shape
A variety of shapes is present as well. Olive, pumpkin ash and larch trees grow in Illinois. The leaves of the pumpkin ash are oval or oblong in shape, while larch tree leaves are very small and prickly, similar to a pine needle. Black willow trees have leaves in a small, slender shape as well, and cottonwood willow tree leaves are somewhat heart-shaped.
Growth Patterns
The elongated leaves of the custard apple tree or pawpaw grow in thin groups of three or four; the pointy leaves on the madder and mulberry trees grow along the stem of the tree somewhat symmetrically.
