pH Levels
The alkalinity or acidity of soil is measured by its pH. Soils with a pH below about 7.0 are considered acidic, and a pH below 6.0 is too acidic for some garden vegetables. Finely ground eggshells can be added to the soil to increase pH levels. Eggshells are composed primarily of calcium carbonate, which is highly alkaline and neutralizes acid.
Soil Texture
Adding finely ground eggshells, either by themselves or as part of a compost mix, can help improve the texture of clay soils and improve aeration. Eggshells also have the benefit of adding calcium to the soil.
Pest Control
If you have a problem with slugs in your garden, eggshells can help to keep them away. The shells should be roughly crushed and placed in a circle around plants. Slugs do not like the rough, jagged texture and will avoid these plants.
