Late August Through Early September
These leafy vegetables will quickly "bolt" or begin to flower if the weather is too hot. Depending upon your climate, late August through early September is a good time for reseeding the garden.
Frost Tolerant
Watch for frost and be prepared to provide a cover for the plants if a light frost moves in. All these plants are frost tolerant and easily survive a brush with cold weather.
Creating Optimal Conditions
Seeds should be planted deeper in August than in the spring so they are in cooler soil. It pays to keep the soil moist so the heat doesn't retard germination. You can create a cooler soil by laying several inches of damp straw over the soil several days before planting.
