Two types of blueberry bushes exist: highbush and half-high blueberries. The half-high blueberry can withstand colder temperatures and more extreme winters. It can be successfully planted earlier in the spring then the highbush blueberry.
Planting Time Frame
The ideal blueberry bush planting time is the spring, right after all danger of frost has passed. If you have doubts about a late frost occurring in the region, plant the highbush blueberry type first, in the spring.
Springtime Care
Soak the root system of the blueberry bush for at least one hour before planting so it will wake from its winter dormancy. Right after planting, prune the branches of the plant back by at least half, according to Iowa State University.
Considerations
Once the blueberry bush is planted in the spring, it will try to produce springtime flowers. Consider removing all the flowers each spring for the first two years to encourage a bush appearance and ample growth, according to Ohio State University.
Pollination Warning
Always plant at least three or four species of blueberry bushes in the spring months to ensure adequate pollination. Space the plants approximately 3 to 4 feet apart to give them ample growth room.
