Vinegar and Salt
Vinegar is a natural weed killer, as is salt, according to the website SearchWarp. These two ingredients can be used separately or together by spraying the substance or substances on above-ground plant parts, as well as the immediately surrounding soil to penetrate the roots.
A basic recipe utilizing both ingredients is mixing 1 gallon of white vinegar with 1 cup of table salt and 1 tbsp. of biodegradable liquid dish soap. (ref 2)
Cautions
Spraying vinegar on weeds will likely kill them, but it will also kill other plants with which it comes in contact, so be cautious about avoiding desirable plants. Salt will sink into the soil, making it uninhabitable to most plants, so avoid using it in areas where vegetation will likely be planted in the future.
Alternative Applications
To avoid the risk of killing desirable plants, try manually wiping the vinegar and salt solution onto the leafy plant parts with a sponge. This will do the trick in many cases, according to the website Searchwarp. Wear rubber gloves, as strong vinegar can damage skin.
