Growth
Avocado trees grow quickly and are dense and evergreen. They sometimes reach heights of 80 feet. Some varieties are much smaller and can be grown in containers.
Growth Inhibiting Factors
Some factors prevent avocado trees from reaching full height. Too much water, especially in winter, will kill the tree. Poor-soil draining will contribute to this problem. Don't prune an avocado unless absolutely necessary. This exposes the lower branches to excessive sun that can kill them.
Smaller Cultivars
Some dwarf varieties of avocado trees grow smaller and slower and can be used in containers. Gwen is a Guatemalan type reaching just 14 feet. Ricon is a small tree that produces 10 oz. fruits. Whitsell is dwarf variety growing to only 12 feet tall.
