Flowers contain both male and female reproductive parts. The male parts are the stamen, the anther and the filament, which are collectively responsible for producing and containing pollen. The female parts are contained within the pistil. They include the stigma, which is supported by the stamen, and the ovaries, which contain ovules. The female parts of the plant receive pollen and allow germination to occur.
Location of Ovaries
The ovaries are usually located in the well-protected center of the flower, although this can vary according to species. The ovaries act as a kind of protective chamber around the fragile ovules, which develop into seeds from which new plants grow.
Biological Functions of the Ovaries
The female ovary is attached to the male stigma by a tube known as the style, through which pollen is transferred in order to fertilize ovules stored in the ovary. Once the ovules have been fertilized and developed into seeds, the ovary can act as a vehicle to disperse the seeds in order for them to germinate.
Human Use of Plant Ovaries
Once the ovules contained within the ovaries have been fertilized, the ovaries turn into fruit that is sometimes edible to humans. Examples are cherries and apples.
