Many pet owners rely on harsh chemicals on their lawns to get rid of fleas, but you can try all-natural home remedies that work just as well. The key is to take a holistic approach by covering all your bases: You'll want to protect your pet, home and lawn from fleas to be sure that they don't turn up anywhere, no matter where they first invade.
Ridding Your Lawn Of Fleas
A good way to get rid of fleas organically is to sprinkle diatomaceous soil in your yard and garden. The diatomaceous soil is specifically designed to contain sharp edges so that the flea larva becomes damaged while it is crawling through the soil. The larva is then unable to pupate, and then cannot grow into an adult flea.
You can also use 2 ounces of bleach and mix with 2 ounces of water. Pour the mixture into a garden sprayer and coat your lawn with it. You can use the bleach-water mixture once every 10 days to keep fleas at bay.
Lining your fence line with cedar chips will keep fleas from the neighbor's yard from infesting yours. Alternatively, sprinkling at your fence lines does the same thing as the cedar chips.
Keeping Fleas Out of Your Home
Keeping your pet bathed and brushed regularly will go a long way in keeping the flea population down. Also, vacuum your carpet often to pick up eggs that fleas may have laid.
Place a bowl of soapy water on the floor and shine a lamp onto the water. The fleas will jump at the heat that the lamp puts off and land in the soapy water, killing them.
Keeping Fleas Off Your Pets
Place a sliced lemon in a container and pour 1 cup of boiling water over the lemon slice. Do not forget to add the lemon skin inside the container. Allow the lemon to soak overnight in the water and then rub the mixture into your pet's coat and skin. Citrus repeals fleas naturally.
Fleas hate the taste and aroma of vinegar so bathing your pet in distilled white vinegar will help rid them of fleas. Alternatively, bathing your pet in a combination of tea tree oil or lavender essential oils will keep fleas off of him while giving your pet's coat a pleasant smell.
Add brewer's yeast or garlic pills to your pet's diet to help protect him against fleas from the inside out by making your pet's skin inhospitable for the fleas. You can also add a few drops of natural apple cider vinegar to your pet's water dish to make his skin more acidic, which fleas do not like.
