Ridding a home or lawn of pesky ants is a problem encountered by numerous homeowners across the country. To avoid harming your family, plants or pets, you should use a non-toxic or organic alternative to chemical poisons. A few simple and effective methods for ant control exist without harming the surrounding ecosystem; most ingredients can be found in your cupboard.
Instant Grits
Grits are a traditionally Southern breakfast item. Grits are also an extremely effective way to control your ant problem in your yard. The grits work after the ants in the colony distribute and consume them. After eating the grits, the grits expand in the ants stomach and explode, thus killing the ant.
Pour instant grits directly from the bag or box onto the ground around an ant colony and along ant foraging trails. Do not wet the grits; pour them onto dry ground and not during rain. The water will expand the grits and reduce its effectiveness. Wait up to four days and then check the colony. This can kill an entire colony.
Lemon and Baking Soda Solution
A great home recipe for killing unwanted ants combines three ingredients commonly found in an ordinary household. Ants dislike chalky substances and substances high in citric acid. In your home you may have a box of baking soda, lemon juice and water.
Dissolve one cup of baking soda in one gallon of water and add 1/2 cup of lemon juice. Heat the mixture just to a boil while stirring constantly. Bring your solution outside. Before you pour it onto the ant colony, crush up one or two sticks of ordinary white chalk. Sprinkle the chalk onto the ant colony. This will deter the ants from moving around the entrance to the colony because the chalk gets stuck to their legs. Pour the solution onto the colony and around ant-foraging trails. This process may take two applications for the solution to penetrate the entire colony. The colony should be completely destroyed in a three to four days.
