There are five types of moles that are found commonly in the United States. Though moles are beneficial for gardens because they feed on grubs and insects, they can damage lawns and gardens by separating the plant roots from soil with their extensive tunneling. They are mostly present in soil with high levels of insects and grubs. Spreading lime on the ground will not get rid of moles, but there are other methods that can reduce their numbers or drive them away from your yard.
Ineffective Methods
There are many ways people seek to control mole infestations. These include mothballs, lime, broken glass, chewing gum, exhaust fumes and flooding mole tunnels. These are not effective control strategies.
Effective Methods
The results of controlled studies show that the most effective mole control methods are direct killing, traps and castor oil-based repellents. Castor oil repellents are spread and watered in and remain effective for one to three months. Another method that usually works is treating the soil with hot pepper products. Mechanical devices that vibrate and rattle also help keep moles away, but you would need to buy a great many of them.
Pesticides: Pro and Con
Moles are not only fond of insect larvae like grubs, but they also feed heavily on earthworms. However, do not use pesticides to control moles. Using pesticides in sandy soil may reduce moles, but using pesticides in heavy, clay soils will have no effect. In addition, the heavy use of pesticides can destroy predator insects that help to naturally control certain lawn pests.
