Ladybugs can be beautiful creatures, but they also multiply quickly and feed off of the plants and shrubbery in your garden and around your home. There are many lethal sprays that can be applied, but these are expensive and contain harsh ingredients that can harm you and your home. Instead, consider non-lethal, natural ingredients that will repel lady bugs as well as other bothersome insects.
Garlic
Garlic is a strong herb that repels ladybugs with ease. Garlic can be applied around your home in a variety of ways. You can simply place garlic cloves throughout your garden and flower beds, or you can chop garlic into fine pieces and sprinkle throughout your garden. Alternately, puree a handful of garlic cloves into liquid form and mix it in a spray bottle with two cups of water. Spray onto soil and shrubbery. One final method, and arguably one of the easiest, is to simply fill a spray bottle with water and mix it with three teaspoons of garlic powder. Spray the mixture onto soil and plants. When using a spray form, add a few drops of liquid dish detergent to your solution to create an adhesive action that will stick to plant leaves for an extended period of time.
Pepper
Pepper also gives off a strong scent that repels ladybugs without killing them. When your garden emits a hot pepper scent, ladybugs will steer clear of your plants and shrubbery. In a spray bottle, mix two cups of water with three teaspoons of crushed red pepper, chili pepper or paprika. Add a few drops of liquid dish detergent to create adhesive action, and spray over plant leaves and soil to keep ladybugs at bay. Repeat every two weeks or as ladybugs return to your flowerbeds.
Marigolds
Marigolds also emit a strong odor that ladybugs do not enjoy. Grow marigold in your garden to keep the strong scent emitting throughout the season, or purchase a bottle marigold essential oil from your local health supply store. In a spray bottle, combine two cups of water with two teaspoons of the essential oil. Add a few drops of liquid dish detergent and spray onto leaves and soil every two weeks to keep ladybugs at bay.
