Vinegar
Use a gallon of white vinegar, mix in a pound of table salt, and boil to dissolve the salt. Add a dash of dish soap. Spread directly and carefully on the dandelion foliage. Don't get the mixture on the surrounding grass. One application will usually kill the plant.
Mulching
Use plastic mulch to cover the plant and block it from sunlight. Cover the mulch and weigh it down with compost, grass clippings or bark. An alternative is oak-leaf or maple-leaf mulch, which has been shown to be effective in keeping down dandelion growth.
Corn Gluten Meal
Use corn gluten meal, available at most farm supply stores or garden centers. Apply to the lawn at least four weeks before your dandelions usually begin appearing in the spring. This prevents the dandelions from developing a root system when their seeds germinate.
