Gophers are small rodents that burrow underground and create large systems of tunnels. They are considered pests by farmers and homeowners alike. Gophers can damage crops, especially alfalfa, by eating their roots as well as damage house lawns by pushing out the dirt from digging underground tunnels to form mounds on the lawn. These pests can be controlled by using poisoned bait, such as Rozol Gopher Bait.
Rozol Gopher Bait
Rozol Gopher Bait contains chlorophacinone, which is an anticoagulant. This works in animals by not allowing the blood to clot while also damaging capillaries. The bait needs to be eaten several times over several days to be lethal.
The advantages of this kind of bait is that if a child or a pet were to eat the bait, there would be time to give them the antidote, which is vitamin K(1). Also, the manufacturers of Rozol claim that it does not lose effectiveness when it gets wet, so it can be used in inclement weather.
Digging
Digging is one of two primary ways to safely deliver the bait to the gophers. In several of the freshest fan-shaped gopher mounds, find the plug on the flat side and remove it from the hole. Use a long-handled spoon or a small, thin trowel. Place a half cup of Rozol inside the hole and replace the plug. Try not to cover up the bait in the tunnel. Keep putting bait in the tunnel system until there is no longer any gopher activity in the area.
Probing
You can also locate the main tunnel by probing 1 to 1 1/2 feet around the mound with a metal rod or a stick. Probe 6 to 12 inches into the ground at an angle. The tunnel will provide less resistance. Carefully open up the probe hole to place the bait in the tunnel and then cover up the hole. There are reservoir-type probe bait dispensers that can be used. When you find the tunnel you push a button to deliver the bait. This is a good product to use for a large field.
