The Cub Cadet LTX series features a 19-horsepower engine and 42-inch mowing deck. Marketed by Cub Cadet as easy-to-operate riding lawnmowers, the line is basic and designed so users have all controls within reach. The LTX line has been known for developing basic problems. While problems with any mower may require professional repairs, most issues with the LTX can be fixed by knowing common issues and the simple troubleshooting techniques required to fix them.
Engine Fails to Start
Starting failures are sometimes attributed to user error, which is common during the first few hours of use. If the engine fails to start, make sure the PTO switch in the "ON" position. The PTO lever, which engages the blade, is on the top of the tractor along the right side. If the lever is not in the "ON" position, the engine will not start. The parking brake must also be depressed before starting.
Rough Engine Performance
It's not uncommon, especially as the LTX gets broken in after a few uses, for its engine to run a bit rough. This is a common issue often caused by a cold engine, loose wires and dirt that falls into the gas tank. Each issue can be fixed without professional assistance. Shifting the throttle control to the choke position for a few seconds allows the engine to get a richer fuel/air mixture so it runs smoother. Ensuring a clean gas tank and spark plugs with wires in place also helps quell erratic engine performance.
Mulching Problems
While the Cub Cadet LTX's mulching feature gets the job done, its one-cylinder, 19-horsepower motor does not always perform as well as bigger engines capable of barreling through thick cover. This can be avoided by cleaning the deck often and taking precautions when mowing and mulching long grass. By mowing your yard on a high-blade setting before mulching, you will top off the grass, allowing the engine to work freely without the need to trudge through grass too thick for it to cut.
