As the name suggests, privacy fencing provides your yard with privacy. Not only does it block the view of your yard from prying eyes, but it also helps to reduce noise. Privacy fences are typically made of wood or vinyl, but other materials, such as stone, can be used. If you are installing a privacy fence, there are several style options available to meet your needs and taste.
Stockade
Stockade fencing is constructed of vertical wood boards that are attached side-by-side, with no gap between them, to three horizontal boards: one at the top, one in the middle and one at the bottom of each fence section. The top of each vertical wooden board comes to a point. They are typically made from light-colored woods, such as spruce, pine and fir. The clean lines of stockade fencing give your yard a simple look.
Shadow Box
A shadow box fence serves as both a privacy and ornamental fence. These fences, which can be made of either vinyl or wood, are constructed of vertical boards that are attached to three horizontal boards. Unlike the stockade fence, vertical boards are attached to both the front and back of the horizontal boards. Because shadow box fences look the same from both sides, they lend a decorative accent to both sides of the fence.
Basket Weave
Basket weave fences also serve as privacy and decorative fences. In basket weave fencing, wood or vinyl that is made to resemble wood is horizontally woven or crisscrossed over thin vertical planks, similar to the weave found on a basket.
Decorative Tops
Privacy fences can also feature decorative tops. Made from vinyl or wood, the majority of a decoratively topped fence is constructed like a stockade fence, in that vertical planks are arranged side-by-side with no gap between them. To give the fence a more attractive appearance, the upper half of the fence may feature a design, such as lattice, basket weave or open pickets.
Stone Fence
For a completely different and unique privacy fence, use stone. Differently sized stones are piled on top of one another and mortared together to ensure that there are no gaps that allow visibility through the fence. The different colors and sizes of stones used lend natural beauty to the fence. In lieu of actual stones, concrete can be used to form stone-shapes for this type of fence.
