Which Fruit Trees Grow Well in Ohio?

Dozens of fruit trees and sub-species grow well within the state of Ohio. Some trees only produce fruit in the spring and summer while other types of trees continue to produce fruit throughout most of the year. Most fruit trees need full sun and light pruning once or twice per year. The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation says that good soil drainage and air circulation are vital for growing fruit trees.

Apple trees grow well within the state of Ohio. These trees need well-drained, fertile soil and full sun to thrive. Use a garden tiller to break up clay-like soils. You also can improve the quality of your soil by adding compost, peat moss or manure to the ground before planting. Dig a 3-foot-deep hole and plant your tree. Water your apple trees every other week unless there is a drought. Most apple trees do not produce any fruit for the first year, and some trees only produce small fruits for the first few years after planting. Mature fruit begins to appear as the tree ages. Choose between different varieties such as "Pristine," "Liberty" and "Goldrush."

Peach trees also grow well in the state of Ohio. Peaches need a lot of water to thrive, so water your peaches twice weekly unless there is ample rainfall. Like apple trees, peach trees may not bear fruit right away. The foliage is glossier than other fruit trees. Peach trees need moist, nutrient-dense well-drained soil and full sun. Improve the fertility of the soil by adding peat moss, humus and other organic matter to the ground before planting peach trees. Dig a 3-foot hole and plant a transplant from the nursery. Transplants are easier to grow than peach trees that start from seed.

Nectarines also grow well in Ohio. These trees require some of the same basic needs as the peach tree in regard to soil and sunshine. Check the plant for diseases before planting in your home garden. Nectarines are ready to harvest when the fruit is light pinkish or cream in color. The fruit continues to ripen after it's picked from the tree.
