Gala
Gala apples, originating in New Zealand, are a sweet, small to medium-sized fruit with a heart shape and yellow and red stripes. The University of Illinois Extension recommends them for eating fresh or for baking, salads or applesauce.
Honeycrisp
Native to Minnesota, honeycrisp apples have a sweet flavor and aroma. The color is greenish-gold with a reddish tint. Rome apples are bright red with a firm texture and a mild taste that makes them a good choice for snacking or for use in pies or sauces, according to the Virginia State Apple Board. When baked, Rome apples hold their shape. Cooking intensifies the flavor and color.
