Florida's year-round warm weather and tropical climate offers diversity among the different types of plants and vegetation found throughout the state. Everything from small shrubs to large palm trees are able to grow and thrive in Florida. The plants in the state offer a flowering landscape, shade and added beauty to both personal and wild landscapes.
Firebush
The hamelia patens is a small shrub (more commonly known as the firebush) that can grow as tall as 10 to 15 feet. This evergreen produces red, tubular flowers and is a popular landscaping choice. Butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to the firebush and its flowers. The leaves of the firebush are light to dark green with reddish blotches and veins, averaging 2 to 6 inches in length. The tree’s multiple trunks offers it enough hold in the ground during a hurricane or other strong Florida storm.
The firebush is primarily found in north Monroe County, north up to Volusia County, as well as in Marion County.
Sea Grape
The cochlea uvifera (sea grape) is a medium-sized tree located in many of Florida’s coastal areas. The sea grape thrives best around salt water and full-sun exposure. The sea grape grows up to 30 feet tall and has round, 8-inch green leaves with some dark shades of red. The plant offers protection to many small animals, including songbird, lizard, gopher tortoise and beach mice. The plant also offers protection for Florida’s dunes, which is imperative to the successful nesting of the four different sea turtles that nest on the beaches.
Cabbage Palm
The sabal palmetto, or cabbage palm, is the state tree. It grows up to 30 feet tall and thrives in Florida’s moist soil and warm, sunny weather. In the summer the cabbage palm produces a small white flower, and in the fall it produces an edible fruit. The fan-shaped leaves of a cabbage palm measure 4 to 5 inches long and 1 to 2 inches wide.
