Rainforests are regions around the globe that have warm, humid temperatures and receive an above average amount of rainfall every year. Trees that grow in the rainforest have adapted to poor soil conditions and partial shade. According to Blue Planet Biomes, most rainforest trees have straight trunks that do not branch out for 100 feet, have smooth, thin bark and can only be identified by their flowers.
Avocado
The avocado is sometimes referred to as the alligator pear. It is an evergreen, tropical fruit tree that can grow up to 80 feet tall. It is native to the rainforests of southern Peru and Mexico, and blooms in mid winter. The flowers grow in clusters of 200 to 300 yellow to green blooms. The fruit is large, pear-shaped and grows up to 2 lbs. Avocado trees are emergent trees in a rainforest. Although the trees will grow in shade, they prefer full sun and will often choke out other trees in order to get adequate sunlight.
Banana
The banana tree is a tropical fruit tree that is native to southeast Asia and New Guinea. It can grow up to 25 feet tall. The leaves of the banana tree are large, up to 2 feet wide and 8 feet long. The fruit of the tree grows in tiers with up to 20 bananas on each tier. They are green in color and turn yellow as they ripen. The tree prefers full sun to partial shade, and well-drained soils.
Lemon
The lemon tree is a citrus fruit tree that can commonly be found in rainforests and other tropical areas. The trees can grow between 10 and 20 feet tall. The red flowers of the lemon tree bloom in the spring. The fruit is yellow when ripe, oval and approximately 4 inches long. The tree cannot tolerate temperatures below 25 degrees Fahrenheit. It can tolerate poor soils but thrives best in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils.
Guava
Guava trees are native to rainforests of Mexico and South and Central America. The tree is an evergreen that can grow up to 33 feet tall, and has white, fragrant, 1-inch flowers that bloom in the spring. The fruit is green, round and up to 4 inches long. Guava trees are tolerant to a wide variety of conditions, including poor quality soils, though they prefer full sunlight and well-drained soil.
