Flowers in Grasslands
Flowers in Grasslands. Grasslands have few trees or plants other than grass though some flowers grow in the expanses. Most are wildflowers and many grow with spikes on the stems to deter plant-eating animals. There are two types of grassland, the savanna and the temperate grassland.

Blazing Stars
Blazing Stars are a tall, hardy plants that grows from a tuber. The leafy stems can grow up to around 5 feet tall. The bottom of the plant and the leaves usually have short and stiff hairs. The top part of the Blazing Star contains spikes of rose-purple, thistle-like flowers. The flowers usually bloom in late summer and autumn.
Sunflowers
The Sunflower forms in dense groups in grasslands and typically spreads very quickly. Sunflower leaves are mainly at the bottom of the plant. The blossoms have yellow petals and brown centers. The height of the plant usually ranges between 1 and 5 feet and livestock and other animals eat it. The flower blooms in late summer.
Goldenrods
Goldenrods are flowers that offer bright yellow flowers and have a flat-topped cluster of flowers. The plant can grow to be a little over 3 feet tall. The flower normally blooms in autumn. Wildlife will typically leave this plant alone, so it grows more abundantly in grasslands that livestock have grazed.
Coneflowers
Coneflowers grow with an erect stem, typically around 3 feet high. The plant is a perennial herb and has reddish-purple blooms, sometimes pink or white. The middle of the bloom has a spiky appearance and the stems are rough with small hairs. The Coneflower blooms between May and June.
Wild Indigo
Wild indigo plants are a perennial flower that usually blooms in warm weather. The plant stems are stout and can grow up to about 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The flower blooms range in color from a light blue to a dark purple. When the flower reaches maturity, the blooms turn silvery and break off from the root.
Asters
Asters are perennial plants that grow from 2 to 6 feet tall. The leaves of the flower can be up to 4 inches long and 1 inch wide. The blooms are typically a bright purple color and have a central yellow disk. The flowers typically bloom between August and October.
