It's hard to keep your dog from damaging your lawn, but it's an even bigger challenge when someone else's dog is creating the problem. If you can't build a fence, it is possible to keep unwanted dogs off your lawn with commercial products and home remedies. Trespassing dogs can mar your lawn by digging in the dirt, eating or trampling vegetation or causing yellow spots where they eliminate. They also may pose a danger to you and your family or pets.
Motion-Activated Sprinklers
A sudden spray of water may be enough to surprise a dog into getting off your lawn. Motion-activated sprinklers installed in your yard will go off when they sense motion, greeting the lawn invader with a splash of water. Eventually, the dog will start to associate the unpleasant experience with your yard and will avoid entering it. As an alternative, you could squirt the dog with water from a hose; however, you can't stand watch over your yard at all times.
Sprays or Powders
Many pet or home improvement stores and garden centers carry sprays or powders that are designed to repel dogs, some lasting up to three months. According to VetInfo, repellents that smell like dog and fox urine scare away dogs from the lawn. Most products are applied directly to the lawn; however, follow the directions for your particular product.
Baking Soda
When mixed with water, baking soda can be successful in keeping dogs off of lawns. Dogs often will revisit the areas where they've already urinated. Applying the baking soda and water mixture on those areas will help cover up the scent, which may prevent the dog from coming back, according to VetInfo. Mix one cup of baking soda with one gallon of water and apply to the affected areas twice weekly. This has the added benefit of helping the yellowed grass recover.
Vinegar
Vinegar often works to keep dogs out of an area because most detest its smell, suggests VetInfo. Pour or spray undiluted vinegar around the perimeter of your yard each day to keep canines off of your lawn. Be careful to apply it only to areas that do not contain vegetation, such as sidewalks, driveways or the road. Vinegar will kill weeds and grass on contact.
