Although white flowers are less common than their blue and red counterparts, there are still several varieties of flowering bushes that produce white flowers. These bushes vary in height, ideal growing conditions and overall look. This diverse choice amongst foliage allows gardeners everyone to choose the perfect shrub for their landscaping needs.
Choisya
Choisya is a small evergreen shrub commonly seen in warm climates, like that found in the southwestern portion of North America. It has a fragrant scent and, when in bloom, produces several small white blossoms that cover the shrub. These blossoms are so similar in appearance to orange blossoms that Choisya bushes are oftentimes referred to as Mexican orange blossom.
White Rhododendron
Rhododendron, while commonly pink, can be found in stunning shades of white. It grows to a height of 3 to 4 feet, making it somewhat small in comparison to pink rhododendron. These hearty bushes flower from early spring to early summer and can thrive in partial shade or full sunlight.
Nannyberry
Nannyberry is a type of viburnum native to North America and lower Canada. It's quite large, reaching up to 30 feet in height. When in bloom, nannyberry produces several small white flowers that grow in bunches. The flowers give way to small, dark blue berries that, contrary to most viburnum, are safe for human consumption.
Hydrangea
Hydrangea bushes usually produce varying shades of either blue or pink flowers. These colors are determined by the acidity of the soil. Another variety of hydrangea shrub produces only white flowers, which grow in large, clustered bulb shapes composed of dozens of small four petal flowers. White hydrangeas are native to North and South America, as well as most of Asia, and bloom from early spring to late fall.
Cistus Shrub
Cistus is a small flowering perennial shrub that produce both white and pink flowers. Cistus shrubs are native to the Mediterranean area and may need some extra care in American gardens. Modern scientists are studying the possibility of using Cistus as a component to an avian flu vaccination.
Sambucus Nigra
Also known as elderberry, European black elder, or sambucus nigra, is a type of shrub residing mainly in the Northern Hemisphere. These shrubs are covered in small white blossoms from late spring through summer. The flowers are replaced in early autumn with a dark blue berry that is edible despite the leaves, blossoms and wood of this shrub being highly toxic to humans.
