Indoor trees create a visual impact inside the home. Many trees can be grown indoors, although flowering varieties may not produce many blooms. Most trees grow only as large as the container size allows. Growing ornamental trees in small pots will serve to restrict growth and keep the tree at a small size. Trees need sunlight, but some trees can get by with less and so are better choices to grow indoors.
Miracle Fruit Tree
The miracle fruit tree, or Sapotaceae, is an interesting tropical native. Although the tree can grow to 18 feet tall outdoors, it can be kept to 5 feet tall as an indoor plant. To grow the miracle fruit tree indoors, keep the plant near a sunny window. The miracle fruit tree has dark green foliage, with white flowers that appear for several months each year. The tree produces small, red fruits that, once eaten, enable you to taste the flavor and sweetness of lemons and limes, without experiencing the sour taste.
Parlor Palm Tree
The parlor palm tree, or Chamaedorea elegans, is commonly seen in office buildings. This palm grows to 4 feet tall. The bushy, feathery fronds of the parlor palm thrive in low light, making it a good choice for apartment dwellers. The palm sometimes produces small yellow flowers.
Weeping Fig Tree
The weeping fig, or Ficus benjamina, develops a canopy of dark, glossy leaves. This popular tree can get as large as 10 feet tall, but growth can be kept in check by keeping it in a smaller pot. The weeping fig is available in shorter dwarf varieties, as well. Adding to its visual interest, you can buy weeping figs with braided trunks. The weeping fig likes bright, indirect light and tends to drop its leaves in low-light conditions.
Madagascar Dragon Tree
The Madagascar dragon tree, or Dracaena marginata, grows as a cluster of spiky leaves on top of a bare stem. The red-edged leaves grow as long as 16 inches. The Madagascar dragon tree can grow to 6 foot tall, but its height is easily controlled by cutting off the top of the plant at the stem. This cut-off portion, with the leaves, can be rooted and grown as a new plant. The Madagascar dragon tree will survive low-light conditions, but not soggy soil.
Money Tree
The money tree, or Pachira aquatica, prefers indirect sunlight. It even thrives with fluorescent light, making it a good choice for areas of the home with limited natural light. The money tree grows to 10 feet tall outdoors, but its height is easily controlled by growing it in small pots and pinching off new growth as it appears. This large-leafed plant is sometimes sold as several plants combined with a braided trunk.
