Well known for its long lifespan, beauty, and rarity, the orchid is one of the most popular flowers in the world, according to reporters at TV New Zealand. Belonging to family Orchidaceae of the plant kingdom, it has more than 20,000 species and is grown on all continents except Antarctica. The orchid comes in a wide variety of shapes and colors. Orchids are classified by three different methods: growth, habitat, and appearance.
Monopodial
Monopodial orchids feature a central growing stem and produce new growth from the crown of the plant. They produce flowers from the stem, alternating sides as the flower rises.
Sympodial
Sympodial orchids send out shoots from adult flowers that grow into new orchids. The buds of sympodial orchids are often protected by sheaths.
Terrestrial
Terrestrial orchids are species that grow on the ground. They are easy to propagate. The most common example is the Cymbidium. When properly grown, it produces a bunch of attractive blooms.
Epiphytic
Epiphytes are orchid species that grow in trees. Common epiphytes are Dendrobiums and Phaleonopsis. Dendrobiums come in more than 1,000 varieties found in Southeast Asia, Australia, Polynesia and Northern India. The Phaleonopsis orchid is especially known for its dazzling white color and, unlike most epiphytes, it is easy to grow. Most epiphytes require more care than terrestrial orchids. Their blooms are also not as predictable as those of terrestrials.
Lithophytic
Lithophytes are usually found deep in bases of trees and rocks. Their roots feed on fungus and decaying mosses.
Moth
Moth orchids have flowers that look like moths with spread wings. A common example of the moth orchid is the Phalaenopsis.
Dendrobium
Dendrobium is one of the largest of the orchids and considered as one of the favorites at home gardens. It grows in a warm environment and withers in the cold. Dendrobium orchids relative have small flowers. They are both epipythe and lithopyte.
Boat
Boat orchids have been depicted in art and potery since the time of Confucius. The Cymbidium is a boat orchid. It has big bright petals that bloom in large numbers.
Slipper
The flowers of slipper orchids are unique in appearance. Petal shapes are not uniform, and have a pouch-like appearance. Lady slipper orchids are perhaps the most well known variety. Slipper orchids are both terrestrial and lithophytic.
