Ferris Industries began manufacturing mowers in the late 1980s and now offers a full line of walk behind, three-wheel rider and zero-turn mowers. Ferris mowers are heavy-duty machines and have relatively few problems compared to other brands of mowers. Following the operator's manual and providing routine maintenance can prevent most problems with Ferris mowers.
Operating Problems
A Ferris mower will not crank if the parking brake is not engaged and the electric clutch is off. Other reasons the mower will not crank include a battery with little or no charge, corroded battery cables, dirty or damaged spark plugs or broken electrical wires. A defective solenoid, starter or safety interlock switch can also prevent a mower from starting.
The wrong type of oil or low oil level can cause the engine on a Ferris mower to knock. If the engine is running hot or the crankcase is overfilled with oil, the mower will use an excessive amount of oil. A dirty air filter or a closed crank control can cause the engine to produce black exhaust smoke.
Mowing Problems
If the mower deck on Ferris mower will not move up or down, the lift linkage may be connected improperly or broken. The mower may stall when the blades are engaged if you have the engine speed set too slow or if you are mowing too fast. It may also stall if the mower deck is set too low or if the discharge chute is clogged.
Cutting Problems
Several problems can cause a Ferris mower to cut improperly. Dull, worn or damaged blades are the most common reason for streaks or uneven areas in the grass. Streaking is also caused by setting the engine speed too slow, mowing too fast and not overlapping the rows enough. An uneven mowing deck or one set too low, as well as tires that are not inflated properly, can leave scalped or uneven areas. Other reasons for uneven mowing include a damaged mower deck, a bent or loose mower spindle and a clogged discharge chute.
