There are hundreds of pesticides available to remove ants from your home. Choosing the right one depends on the species and intensity of the infestation. Though there is a wide variety of ant pesticides on the market, many use the same active ingredients. In addition, some of the most effective ways to get rid of ants in your home incorporate common household chemicals
Fipronil
Fipronil is a versatile chemical that is used in more than 50 pesticide products. In its pure form, fipronil is a powdery white substance, but is usually mixed with other chemicals to attract ants, or diluted in liquid form. Fipronil kills ants by disrupting the central nervous system of individual ants that come in contact with the chemical. However, its success relies on ant trophallaxis to spread the chemical through the colony. Worker ants eat the chemical and then transfer the toxins to other ants in the colony. Eventually, once enough ants have consumed the chemical it will reach and kill the queen, eleminating the colony as well.
Imidacloprid
Imidacloprid is a common pesticide used to remove ants. The synthetic chemical is a derivative of nicotine that, when in ingested by ants, disrupts the central nervous system and causes death. Imidacloprid is the active ingredient in many liquid ant baits available on the market. Worker ants that feed on baits with imidacloprid spread the chemical throughout the colony helping to remove ants permanently.
Chlorpyrifos
Chlorpyrifos is a broad spectrum insecticide and the active chemical in a number of spray insecticides. Chlorpyrifos is a contact poison and kills ants quickly. It is not spread to other ants in the colony, but will continue to kill ants who come across remnants of the chemical. Chlorpyrifos comes in many forms including pellets, sprays and wettable powders.
