The neritic zone is the top 200 meters (656 feet) of the ocean and and it includes the entire seashore and the majority of the ocean shelf. There is a large variety of animals and plants that live in the neritic zone. Plant life in the neritic zone is especially important to the ecosystem, both in the zone itself and globally, because it is one of the largest producers of photosynthesis (and thus oxygen) in the world.
The most common form of plant life found in the neritic zone is plankton. Plankton is often microscopic, but some are visible to the naked eye. The most common form of plant plankton is phytoplankton (as opposed to zooplankton, which is animal plankton). Phytoplankton is the largest source of photosynthesis on the plantet and relies on the minerals in the ocean, in a similar fashion to how land-based plants grow in soil.
Seaweed, also known as sargasso, is especially common in the Atlantic Ocean. The two most common are "Sargassum natans" and "Sargassum fluitans." Some areas of seaweed are so extensive that they sustain their own mini-ecosystems and are the habitat of different types of sea animals.
The neritic zone is also home to the coral reef. In addition to plankton and seaweed found in other areas of the ocean, the coral reef is home to mangroves., which are large and shrub-like. Mangroves grow in shallow areas of the roof and are rooted in the soil while their leaves are above water.
