Raccoons may appear like adorable and friendly animals on television. However, the reality is that raccoons are destructive animals and one of man's greatest adversaries. Raccoons are "masked" bandits. They invade homes, topple garbage cans and will even move right into your attic if given even the smallest window of opportunity. A raccoon's basic needs for food and shelter are so strong that it will go to great lengths to fulfill them. Raccoons can damage your home and property, and make your life unbearable.
Raccoons also carry viruses like rabies and roundworm. They pose a health risk to you and your family. Raccoons are protected creatures and killing them is a crime punishable by law. The best way to get rid of raccoons is to repel them using remedies that will not inflict harm. There are several to choose from that will send those raccoons back where they came from.
Ammonia
Raccoons are very sensitive to strong smells. Ammonia soaked rags can be used to deter them from coming near your home. Place the soaked rags around door entrances and windows. Pay special attention to attic windows and the chimney, as these are both easy entrances for raccoons. Double the number of rags in these areas and resoak the rags daily.
Mothballs
The scent of mothballs is also noxious to raccoons. Mothballs can easily be thrown on the ground near garden plants, under your deck and also inside the home. Place several mothballs in your attic to further dissuade raccoons from entering.
Cayenne Pepper
The pungent aroma of cayenne pepper is an excellent all-natural repellent to raccoons. Add one small canister of cayenne pepper and one small bottle of hot sauce to a gallon of water. Mix in one teaspoon of dish washing detergent, which will help the solution to adhere to surfaces. Fill a spray bottle with the solution and spray all over your lawn, garden plants, shrubs and bushes. Reapply after watering your plants or after rainfall.
