Honda lawn mowers are used on brands such as Craftsman and Snapper. The engines are synonymous of dependability and a high work-rate, which is why they are on so many brands. There are a couple of different engine specifications on Honda engines that will help you determine which one you need.
Engine Size
Honda uses 160, 163 and 187cc engines. The higher the cc output, the more fuel the engine takes in, which increases the weight it can carry, which is why the 187cc engines are on 21-inch mowers and the 160cc engines are on 19-inch ones. The smaller engines are designed for customers that only have a small chunk of land or are going to use it to trim in places that lawn tractors cannot get around.
Weight
The 187cc engine is the lightest of the three because it uses lighter metals that are just as durable as the heavier engines. The 163cc is slightly lighter than the 160cc. Because of this, the 187cc engine mowers are easier for those such as the elderly, who want control of mowing their lawns, without requiring the extra muscle work. The 160 and 163cc engine models, however, are still easily pushed along by the average adult.
Crankshaft
The 160 and 163cc's crankshafts are 7/8-inches in diameter and rotate counterclockwise. The 187cc engine has a slightly larger crankshaft at 1-inch, but still rotates counterclockwise. This makes the engine more durable as the crankshaft will not get bounced around as much as the smaller crankshafts will.
Price
The 187cc engine is more expensive because of the larger crankshaft, lighter metals and bigger decks. This model is the high-end version of the Honda series, which means it will do more work and is the best engine Honda makes. This model is ideal for customers who are not worried about price or want the highest model possible. The 163 and 160cc versions are nearly identical in price. These models are for consumers on a budget or need a machine that will do only light work.
