Amaryllis, whose botanical name is Hippeastrum, is a tropical flower native to South Africa and South America that has grown in popularity in the United States. Amaryllis flowers offer lily-shaped blooms that sprout from a large bulb; the flowers can reach up to 6 inches in diameter and come in a variety of colors.
White
Amaryllis flowers are popular around the Christmas holidays for decorations and, as a result, white variations of the flower are abundant. The white amaryllis can range from almost a snow-white appearance to blooms that are antique white or creamy.
Yellow
Though not as common, amaryllis flowers also come in a creamy yellow. These cheery blooms are popular for use in flower arrangements and for gifts, and are easy to grow indoors.
Red
Red is one of the most common of all amaryllis colors. Along with the white variety, red Amaryllis flowers make their appearance during the Christmas season, used in holiday decor as well as for gifts. Shades range from bright red to orange-red to deep burgundy.
Pink
Pink amaryllis flowers range from very light pastels to hot pink and a dark, almost cherry-blossom shade. Frequently, growers cross pink and orange shades to produce flowers in a broad range of colors, from bright shades of peach to deeper hues of salmon or pumpkin.
Variegated
In addition to shades of pink, white and red, amaryllis blooms are also sometimes multi-colored. While most variegated amaryllis flowers have a base color of white, growers sometimes cross the flowers with stripes of red, pink, orange or yellow for a more festive look. Amaryllis flowers also appear in solid shades tipped with a bright white trim.
